Albert "Emil" Karschney, age 91 of L'Anse, MI passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on Feb. 23, 1918 in Laurium, MI. He was the son of the late Oscar and Mamie (Runnings) Karschney. Albert was known to most as Emil. At the age of 8, he quit school and began working at his fathers sawmill. He spent most of his life on Huron bay. He was a Sgt in the US Army from 1941 to 1945. During his military career he spent time in the United States, England, and North Africa. During WWII he worked as an airplane mechanic, taking pride in being the head mechanic for the Enola Gay plane. He then moved to Detroit, MI and became an engineer for the auto companies. He also was a commercial fisherman in Vancouver, WA. He was a self-educated, very knowledgable and successful man. Later in life, he spent years being a well-known mechanic for the community. Emil loved fishing, hunting, and telling stories of his time in WWII, and many other life experiences, to his family and friends. He was good to everyone and always willing to help. Surviving are his brother, Kenneth (Dorothy) Karschney of Vancouver, WA; sisters, Rose (Matt) Toyras of Aura, MI; Becky Pasco of Vancouver, WA; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceded in Death are his parents, brother Oscar, sisters Mamie Waisanen and Josephine Kadow. Albert's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 19th at 1:00 pm at Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Jerry Bishop will officiate. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at the graveside under the direction of the American Legion Post #444. A luncheon and fellowship will follow at the Aura Fire Hall. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
