Arvo Jacob Keranen

March 18, 1922 — August 15, 2013

Arvo Jacob Keranen, age 91, from Baraga, MI died on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 18, 1922 in Pelkie, MI, son of the late Jahfet and Hannah (Huttunen) Keranen. Arvo was raised in Pelkie and attended School in Baraga. He married Rachel Knuuttila on June 21, 1952 in Pelkie.

Arvo farmed in the local area and did welding in local welding shops for many years; and he was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 324 for 45 years.

Arvo was a founding member of the Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. He was also on the Pelkie Fair Board and involved with the Baraga County 4-H.

He loved crafting and was very creative. Arvo enjoyed making people laugh and telling Finnish jokes.

Surviving are his wife Rachel Keranen of Baraga; children, James (Sue) Keranen of Largo, FL, Paul (Karen) Keranen of Channahon, IL, Rose Keranen of Dollar Bay, MI, Philip (Adrienne) Keranen of Atlantic Mine, MI; 4 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded by his siblings Helmi Schultz, Helen Hansen, and Arthur Keranen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 17th at 4:00 p.m. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church with Rev. William Chapel officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. The family request flowers be omitted. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
