Ben Turla Capul, age 73, of Pelkie, MI passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Bayside Village in L’Anse, MI after a long battle with cancer. His family surrounded his bed and held his hands through his final moments.
Ben was born February 7, 1942 in the Philippines, son of Bienvenido and Saturnina (Turla) Capul. He graduated from Lianga High School in the Philippines and began college at the University of the Philippines College of Forestry. He came to the United States in 1965, transferring to what is now Michigan Technological University on a scholarship from the Jacobson family, who own All-Wood, Inc. Ben married Hedy Losaria on April 5, 1975 in Chicago, IL. He moved her into his cozy house in the woods, where they raised three children. As the oldest sibling in his family, he also supported the education of his siblings, nieces, and nephews living in the Philippines, which helped them professionally become engineers, nurses, and teachers.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Church. Ben enjoyed reading, watching boxing, Packer football, bird watching, gardening, and woodworking. He was known for his work ethic, dry wit, generosity, and skill as a welder. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his wife Hedy Capul of Pelkie; son Nicholas Capul of Milwaukee; daughters, Althea (Marcel) Treacy of Bethesda, Maryland, Diana (Aaron) Bachman of Williamston, MI; siblings, Warlito (Virginita) Capul, Danilo Capul, Thelma (Ray) Ilagan, and Marietta (Nelson) Lubay, all of the Philippines, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
