Bill Lee Funke Sr., 74, of L'Anse, MI, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 6, 1950, in L'Anse, he was the son of the late Robert and Agnes (Broemer) Funke.
He was a graduate of Baraga Schools and earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice.
Bill had a diverse and hardworking career, including working as a welder with Van Straten Company in Baraga, a truck driver and mechanic, and earlier at National Crane in Nebraska. He was known not only for his strong work ethic but also for his ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him.
Bill had a passion for life and found joy in the simple things. Most days, he could be found working on vehicles in his garage or taking rides through the plains with his loyal sidekick, Bucky. He was a man of immense humor and wisdom, always cherishing every moment with his loved ones. Well known for providing laughter wherever he went, Bill had a special gift for making people smile.
He especially treasured time with his family, creating lifelong memories swimming with his grandchildren in his pool and sharing stories that will be retold for generations. Whether riding his motorcycle on open roads, fixing up a car, or simply enjoying the company of those he loved, Bill embraced life with an open heart and a joyful spirit.
Bill is survived by his three children: Bill (Tina) Funke Jr. of L'Anse, Melissa (Scott) Austin of Coldwater, MI, and Jason (Tom) Funke of Gurnee, IL; his beloved grandchildren: Mercie, Tyler, Jenikka, Emma, and Addison; and his siblings: Donald (Rosie) Funke of L'Anse and Albert Funke of L'Anse. He is also remembered by many other cherished family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Verna; siblings Paul, Bernie, Helen, and Mary.
A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held on Saturday, July 26th at 12:00 p.m in the Aura Cemetery. A reception will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Baraga State Park Pavilion, with the rain location as 220 Center St, L'Anse. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Omega House in memory of Bill.
Bill's love, laughter, and adventurous spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
