Dannie Arnold Haanpaa, age 79 of L'Anse, MI passed away on Monday, August 20, 2012 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 21, 1933 in Herman, MI son of Arnie V. and Martha (Walitalo) Haanpaa. Dannie graduated from L'Anse High School and then went into the US Air Force for 20 years where he was a drill sergeant; he was in during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He married Amelia "Molly" Oyervides. When Dannie retired from the Air Force they moved back to L'Anse and he worked for Cleveland Cliffs for 19 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.

Surviving are his sons, Eric D. Haanpaa and Dannie V. Haanpaa both of L'Anse; step daughters, Connie (Tom) LaForest of Brillion, WI, Martha (Terry) Haanpaa of Herman; brothers, Bill (Pat) Haanpaa of Herman, Terry (Martha) Haanpaa of Herman; sister Bernice Haapala of L'Anse; eight grandchildren, Steven O. LaForest, Laura M., Eric A., Robert J., Alicia R., Amelia, Ryan V., and Dannie J. Haanpaa; eight great grandchildren, Bradon and Brody Peterson, Weston, Zoe, Shylah, Savanah, Aubrey, and Dannie J. Haanpaa.

Proceeding him in death are his parents; wife of 50 years, Amelia; step son Steven Reyes Haanpaa; and brother Bob Haanpaa.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home with Rev. John Autio officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Herman Cemetery with Military rites by Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the American Legion Post 444.
