Denise Theresa Maki, age 67, of L'Anse, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
Denise was born on October 20, 1957, in L'Anse, the beloved daughter of Mervin and Normandine (Boyer) LaFernier. On September 17, 1977, she married the love of her life, Daniel Maki, in Keweenaw Bay, Michigan. Denise dedicated 26 years of service as a medical receptionist for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, where she was a trusted and familiar face to many.
Denise lived a life rooted in family, kindness, and community. She had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed walking, camping, reading, crafting, and staying active. Denise was especially known for her gift of bringing people together, organizing family gatherings and celebrations that were filled with laughter. Her vibrant sense of humor and warm personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Denise is lovingly remembered by her children: Becky (Dr. John) Simmons of Pelkie, MI; Jessica (Eric) Cadeau of L'Anse; and Emily Maki of L'Anse. She was a devoted grandmother to Zakkary Tussing, Lexus Tussing, Nathaniel Cadeau, Alexander Cadeau, and Genevieve Cadeau. She is also survived by her brother, Richard LaFernier of Hancock, MI.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mervin and Normandine LaFernier, and her husband, Daniel Maki.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 24, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to share memories at 2:30 p.m.
