Donald Elmer Manninen

Donald Elmer Manninen, age 90 of Covington, Michigan passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010.

He was born January 4, 1920 in Covington, MI son of the late Thomas and Lempi (Pikumaki) Manninen. Donald attended school in Covington. He married the former Joyce Smith on July 19, 1958 in Munising. He resided in Negaunee from 1949 to 1981 when he worked at CCI; retiring in 1980 and moving back to Covington in 1981. He was a member of the VFW Post 8945 in Covington.

Surviving are two sons, Daniel (Debbie) Manninen of Gladwin, MI, David (Marcia) Manninen of Negaunee, MI; 2 step daughters, Carolyn Malast of Champion, MI, Peggy Gransinger of Republic, MI; one brother Clarence Manninen of Champion, MI; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

His grandchildren will miss papa's saw-like hand shake and rides in the golf cart along with his great story telling.

Preceding him in death are his wife Joyce; son Elmer Manninen; step daughter Sandra Lynn Vaughn; brothers John, Arne, and Werner Manninen; and sister Elsie Keranen. Graveside services will take place in the Covington Cemetery on Friday, August 6th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Judy Mattson officiating. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
