Ellen “Marie” Hietala, age 92 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Shulstad’s Leisure Living in Baraga, MI.

Marie was born March 16, 1922 in Pequaming, MI daughter to John and Johanna (Wiggins) Soli. She attended school in Pequaming thru the 8th grade and then stayed home to help raise her brothers and sisters. On July 11, 1942 she married Gerald Hietala in Detroit.

She was a member of United Lutheran Church, lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the VFW Auxiliary. Marie enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, knitting, and going to the casino.

Surviving are her son Gerald “Tom” (Shelly) Hietala of Lake Linden, MI; daughters, Sharon (Craig) Struble of Wyocena, WI, Susan (John) Belsito of Sault Ste Marie, MI; brother John Gustafson of Fife Lake, MI; grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff) Smith of Macomb, MI, Shannon (Damon) Utley of West Bloomfield, MI, Stacey (Kevin) Rangel of Waterford, MI, Tom (Katy) Hietala of Hillsboro, OR, and Kylie (Kyle) Bianco of L’Anse; great grandchildren, Jared, Sydney, Griffin, Ryder, Kailob, Kenzie, Julian, and Oliver; numerous nieces and nephews; also survived by our forever sister-in-law Kiki Hietala of L’Anse.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Gerald Hietala; brothers, Ralph, Vernor, Clifford, Donald, twins Thorman and Norman Soli; sisters, Ethel Caldwell, Irene Springstead, Jean Giddings, Edna Martinson, Shirley Wood, Helen Soli, Alice Kautto, and Jean Emblad.

Visitation will be on Thursday, June 26th from 4-6:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church. The funeral service will be at 6:00 p.m. at United Lutheran Church with Rev. Greg Mileski officiating. Burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
