Eugene Niemi, age 81 of Chicago, IL and Aura, MI passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015 at Kindred Chicago Central Hospital in Chicago, IL.
He was born June 3, 1933 in Aura, MI son of Arthur and Margaret (Makela) Niemi. Eugene married Josephine Olszak in 1956. He worked as a welder for Pettibone and CTA both in Chicago. He loved fishing with his buddy Jack and his summer visits at his home in Aura with family and friends.
Surviving are his wife Josephine; son Wayne (Sue) Niemi of L’Anse; daughter Jennifer (Ken) Scheibner of Clinton Twp., MI sisters, Elizabeth (James) Larson and Edith (Jack) Dawson of L’Anse; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; son Melvin Niemi; brother Elwood Niemi; sister Eunice Wandell.
Visitation was held on Friday, March 27th from 5-7:00 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. The funeral service was held at 7:00 p.m with Pastor Peter Suomela officiating. Burial will be June 3rd at 2 PM in the Aura Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse is assisting the family.
