Frank Louis Zeits

Frank Louis Zeits III, 96, of Baraga, MI passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Frank was born on August 9, 1917 in Lake Leelanau, Michigan, son of Joseph and Frances (Salek) Zeits. He attended St. Mary's School in Lake Leelanau. He then spent 2 years in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). On December 2, 1939, He married Laura Genevieve Hahnenberg at St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau, Michigan. During the World War II years he worked at the Willow Run bomber plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He spent the remainder of his career in the area of automotive/truck mechanics and repair, retiring from his most recent position at the Baraga Field Office of the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources in 1982 after working there since 1965.

During his retirement years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his sons and grandsons at the infamous "Z Camp". He amazed everyone with his unlimited energy, strength and a willingness to "take charge". He was well known in Baraga County for his smoked fish, spending countless hours in his ice fishing shack, and providing cut bait to local lake trout fishermen.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his loving wife Laura Genevieve; his brothers Joseph and Emil Zeits; and sister Garnet Walters. Surviving are children, Joyce (Larry) Doele, of Saline, Michigan; Alan Zeits of Yuma, Arizona; Linda (Daniel) Gilevich of Wayne, Michigan; Faye (Ray) Lozier of Baraga, Michigan; and Frank (Nicholle) Zeits Jr., of Ishpeming, Michigan; his brother, Bernard (Peggy) Zeits of Rock, Michigan; his sisters, Mildred Packard of Traverse City, Michigan; Pauline Powers of Lexington, Michigan; and Irene (Harold) Martin of Lake Leelanau, Michigan; 10 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; longtime sidekicks, William "Bud" Hartwick and John Hendrickson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

At the request of the deceased, no visitation or funeral services will be held. A celebration of his life is being planned for January 2014. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Ottawa Sportsman's Club of Pelkie, Michigan. Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
