Gary Elmblad, age 63 of L'Anse, passed away early Saturday, June 28, 2008 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Gary was born in Hancock, MI on December 29, 1944. He was raised in L'Anse and graduated from L'Anse High School in 1963. He went on to attend Northern Michigan University, graduating in 1967. Gary worked as a school teacher at L'Anse and Baraga Area Schools. He then worked for Michigan Family Independence Agency briefly until he became the Baraga County Juvenile Probation Officer and worked in Probate court for over 30 years.

Gary had a great passion for life. He became a private pilot, and enjoyed flying with his friends. He also enjoyed water skiing, downhill skiing, fishing and hunting. His family and close friends knew him best for his bright personality and his love of humor. Gary loved to laugh and make people laugh. He loved to tell stories, jokes, and he enjoyed comedy in all forms. He was a business owner and operated ELM's Country Markets for over 30 years.

Gary was active in the community serving on various boards, councils, and local committees. He was instrumental in various community events including the Baraga county Fly-in and the Fish & Frolic Ice Festivals.

Gary is survived by his loving wife Darlene (Hansen) of L'Anse, his son Donald Elmblad of L'Anse, older brother Dennis Elmblad of Virginia, and older sister Sandra Elmblad of Houghton. Special niece Sabrina Snyder of L'Anse and special nephew Brandon Snyder of Ironwood, MI, several aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces, and many very close friends who are far too numerous to list.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother Brian, mother Ella (Olson) and father Donald Elmblad, his beloved family Dachshund, Oscar.

Jacobson Funeral Home has been entrusted with his cremation arrangements. A private memorial service and party celebrating his life will be held at a later date.
