Helen Irene Hyrkas

Helen Irene Hyrkas, age 70 of Tapiola, Michigan passed away on Thursday, March 05, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan.

She was born on September 16, 1938 in Keweenaw Bay, MI daughter to the late Uno and Ilmi (Syria) Suojanen. Helen graduated from Doelle High School in Tapiola in 1956. She married David Hyrkas in September 1959 in Elo. They resided in Redford Twp., Detroit area, where she worked for the Redford Union School System in the kitchen for several years. In 1990, when they retired, they moved back to Tapiola.

Helen was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie, Otter Lake Sportsman Club, and the Doelle Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her son, Roger (Amy) Hyrkas of Peora, Arizona; daughter, Sherrill Hyrkas of Tapiola; sisters, Ruth (Jerry) Mantta of Tapiola, Adele (Terry) Sintkowski of Rose Lawn Indiana, Judy (Dennis) Kotila of Chassell; sister-in-law. Janie (Bob) Choate of Pioneer, California; and four grandchildren, Jesse, Tony,Fields and Willow; also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. John Autio will officiate. Burial will take place in the spring in the Elo Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
