Helen A. Nelson

Helen Aurora Maki Nelson passed away at Omega House in Houghton on April 25, 2025 Helen was born in L'Anse January 25, 1945, and attended school in Arvon Township and L'Anse.

Helen married Roy Allen Nelson in L'Anse. They had two children, Roy Allen Nelson of Detroit, Michigan, and Sarah (Keisuke) Hinokio of Nagoya, Japan, and grandchild, Taylor Nelson.

Helen and Allen resided in L'Anse, then moved to Sterling Heights, Michigan, where Helen worked for Maritzt. When Alen's health failed, Helen took care of him. After he passed, she eventually moved back to Baraga where she resided until her death.

Helen is survived by her two children and grandchild, and sisters Alice (Jon) Ryander, Lee (Bill) Rowe, Norma (Bill) Virta, brothers in law David Luusua and Jack Bell, and several nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Alec and Gertrude Maki, Sisters Sandy, Verna, and Tina, and brothers Andy, Alec, and David.

A memorial service will be conducted later this summer. Helen was cremated, and will be interred in the Aura Cemetery The family is extremely grateful to Omega House for the excellent care they gave Helen in her last days. In memory of Helen donations can be made to the Omega House, 2211 Maureen Ln, Houghton, MI 49931. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
