Jeane Hill Swanson, age 87 of L'Anse, MI died Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

Jeane was born in Detroit on January 19, 1923, the daughter of Urba Hill and Hilda Oga. She grew up in Baraga and married Lyman Wesley Swanson shortly after graduating from Baraga High School in 1941. During her marriage, Jeane worked as an x-ray technician and lab technician at Baraga County Memorial Hospital, and later as a court stenographer. She went on to be a social worker at the Department of Social Services in L'Anse.

Jeane belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, and was leader of a Baraga Boy Scout troop. In her early years, Jeane was a superb ice skater, and throughout her life, she enjoyed reading, dancing, and traveling. She was an excellent cook, and some of her recipes were published in the Eastern Star cookbook. Jeane, who was always very particular about her appearance, delighted in shopping and always appeared in public perfectly dressed. Local people remember seeing her driving down the main street of Baraga in her turquoise Cadillac, looking glamorous.

Jeane took special joy in her five children, and she gladdened the hearts of all those around her with her positive, optimistic attitude and her "live in the moment" spirit. Jeane is survived by her brother, Melvin "Buddy" (Millie) Hill of Baraga; half-brother Brent Smith of Detroit; her two sons, Larry Lyman (Elaine) Swanson of Grand Rapids; and James Randall (Karen) Swanson of Baraga; her three daughters, Greta Mary Pesognelli, of Westminster, Colorado; Cynthia Anne Hofbauer, of San Diego, California; and J. Lyn Swanson, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
