Marie Elizabeth Kemppainen, 94, of L'Anse, died Saturday evening, September 10, 2005 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
She was born November 9, 1910, in Duluth, Minnesota, a daughter of the late Frank and Octavia (Bernard) Voakes. Marie has been a lifelong area resident. On November 23, 1943 she married Waino Kemppainen.
In her early years she worked as a cook for various Conservation Corps camps and was a midwife. Later she worked as a retail clerk at Oralie's for several years.
Marie was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and served as a judge for numerous years at the Baraga County Fair. She enjoyed crafts, knitting, gardening and crocheting.
She is survived by a daughter, Marge Giddings of Baraga; her "other daughter" Irene Pawlowski of Baraga; Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Waino Kemppainen; a son, James; and 3 brothers.
Visitation will be held in the Jacobson Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 13, 2005 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 12 Noon with Pastor Judy Mattson officiating. Interment will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
