Martha M. Niemi age 94 of Mass City passed away on Tuesday July 29, 2008 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse, MI.
Martha was born May 5, 1914 in White Siding, Michigan daughter of Abram and Maria (Kinnunen) Rantala. She married her husband Richard Niemi in 1933. She was a 8th grade graduate of White Siding Grade School and a 1964 graduate of Michigan University (NMU), Marquette, and School of Practical Nursing. She enjoyed reading, picking berries, winning her children in the game of scrabble, deep sea fishing where she was known to have caught the biggest fish of the family; Martha was also an avid coupon clipper for community projects. Martha was an active member of the United Lutheran Church of L'Anse and the Red Hats. While living at Greenhill, she ministered to the other residents by taking there blood pressures, Martha worked at Baraga County Memorial Hospital as a Licensed Practical Nurse until her retirement in 1976.
Surviving are her sons: Eino (Sharon Koski) Niemi of Hancock and Wayne (Donna) Niemi of Mass City; daughters, Lois (Cal) Burt of Phoenix, Oregon, Bernice Huotari of Ontonagon and Judith (Peter) Hiltunen of Ishpeming: son-in-law Robert Ross. 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 4 nephews.
Preceding her in death are her husband Richard in 1961: daughter Darlene Ross: son-in-law Waino Huotari: brothers William and Wesley Rantala: Two grandchildren Terry and Timmy Huotari.
Services will be held on Friday, August 1, 2008 at 1:00PM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mass City, Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Pastor John West will officiate. Interment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Greenland Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Skilled Nursing Unit at Baraga County Memorial Hospital would be appreciated. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
