Mary E (Sterbenz) Kemppainen

May 18, 1921 — February 27, 2017

Mary E. Kemppainen, age 95 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Bayside Village in L’Anse.

She was born May 18, 1921 in L’Anse, MI daughter of John and Margaret (Severenski) Sterbenz. Mary graduated from L’Anse High School in 1938. On September 20, 1943, she married Donald Kemppainen in L’Anse.

Mary was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, St. Rita’s Circle, VFW Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary, Baragaland Senior Citizens, and “Craft Angels”. She enjoyed crafts, pinochle, although she actually ripped up the cards at least once, playing solitaire; she enjoyed beating the devil, reading, baking, and dancing. She took great joy in making pasties for her immediate family and any nieces, nephews or cousins who might be travelling through L’Anse. She was the family historian and had a wonderful gift of remembering her family history and to be able to fill in the details people might be missing.

Surviving are her children, Donna (Russ) Archambeau of Gladstone, MI, Margie (Louie) Roy of L’Anse, Roy (Joanne) Kemppainen of L’Anse, Paul (Chuckie) Kemppainen of Watersmeet, MI; grandchildren, Tom(Brooke), Don, Mike (Melissa), Jean Archambeau, Amy Roy, Jeanette (Sean) Wirtz, Scott (Hannah), and Brittney Kemppainen, Dale (Liz) Kemppainen; great-grandchildren, Tyler & Taryn Wirtz, Brigitte (Donald) Goss, Cody Wilson, Breanna, Sabrina & Dayle Paulina Kemppainen, Dale Kemppainen Jr.; Nora, Ava and Dean Archambeau; great-great grandchildren, Claire and William Goss; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Donald; grandson Bryan Archambeau; siblings, Joseph Sterbenz, Katherine Seratti, Agnes Lawler, Margaret Gasperich, Helen Spehar, Clara Hubbard, and John Sterbenz.

Visitation will be on Thursday, March 2nd from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Her funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church with Fr. Corey Litzner officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
