Matt A. Toyras Jr., age 92 of Aura, MI passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
He was born on August 3, 1918 in Aura, MI son of Matt and Sophia (Haapalehto) Toyras. Matt grew up in Aura and attended school there. He married the former Rose Karschney on October 17, 1942 in Laurium, MI. Matt sawed logs for several loggers in the area prior to serving in the US Army during WWII. He then worked for the DNR and later Celotex where he retired from.
Matt enjoyed hunting, fishing, and making wood. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed cheering people up.
Surviving are his wife Rose Toyras of Aura; daughters Bonnie (Ray) Hill of Aura and Janet (James) Barnett of Skanee; daughter-in-law Marion "Dolly" Maki of Aura; brother Helmer (Pearl) Toyras of Aura; sisters Signe Koski of Aura and Sylvia Nelson of Skanee; 9 grandchildren, Mark Bergerson, Kevin Bergerson, Lisa DeCaire, Tammy Magaraggia, Todd Barnett, Cheryl Barnett, David Toyras, Danny Toyras, and Hunter Hill; 17 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are a son David Toyras; sisters Helga Franciskovich, Hulda Kokko, Hilda Saari, Helvie Gorinac, Gertrude Elmblad, and Siiri Ollila; and a great grandchild Dylan DeCaire.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Rev. Jerry Bishop will officiate. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Aura Fire Hall. The Jacobson Funeral Home in L'Anse is assisting the family.
