May 16, 1913 — April 4, 2010

May (Wivell) Hull, age 96 of Santa Cruz, California passed away on April 4, 2010 in California.

She was born on May 16, 1913 in Houghton, MI daughter to Thomas and May Wivell. May graduated from Houghton High Scholl in 1931. She entered Bronson Nursing School, Kalamazoo, MI, in 1933 and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1936. May worked in hospitals in Kalamazoo, South Haven, and Detroit, MI and in California. She was a staff nurse in San Mateo, CA at Mills Hospital for a number of years. Then May became a private nurse working for Dr. Norman Shumway, the first surgeon to perform a successful heart transplant in the United States at the Stanford Medical Center. She provided critical care nursing for his patients immediately following the operation. May completed her nursing career as a private nurse providing home care for patients.

May moved to California in 1946 and married Wendell B. Hull on August 23, 1946 in San Diego, CA. May and Wendell enjoyed traveling and following University of Michigan football. They lived in Cupertino, CA for forty years; after Wendell died, she moved to Tucson, AZ in 1996, living there until 2005 when she moved back to Santa Cruz, CA.

Surviving are her sister Grace Aumock; nephews Wivell Menge, James (Donna) Quist, John (Sharon) Quist all in Michigan, and Michael (Brenda) Null in California.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Wendell Hull; sister Jane Menge.

A graveside service will be held in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery this summer. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
