Melvin L. Velmer, age 82 of Pelkie, MI passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Bayside Village in L'Anse, MI.

He was born May 25, 1931 in Spalding, MI son of Lawrence and Irene (Poupore) Velmer. Melvin attended school in Spalding and then L'Anse. He went into the US Army and was stationed in France and Germany during the Korean War. He returned to L'Anse and married the former Eleanore Mantila in 1956.

Melvin worked construction for Snowdon Construction, then worked for Celotex for a few years and then for Pettibone until he retired do to becoming disabled.

He loved music and playing guitar and bass guitar in their family band. He enjoyed rock picking and lapidary work, and was an amateur radio operator.

Surviving are his sons, Dennis (Julie) Velmer and Randy (Barb) Velmer both of Alston, MI; daughter-in-law Diane Velmer of L'Anse; brothers, Bob (Shirley) Velmer of Baraga, MI, Richard (Donna) Velmer of L'Anse; sisters, Carol LaFernier of Keweenaw Bay, MI, Patsy Velmer of Baraga, Rosemary (Bill) Heikkinen of Elo, MI, Barbara (Ken) Cline of South Range, MI; nine grandchildren, Stacy, LeAnna, Melissa, Ben, Dillon, Lucas, Jacob, Justina, and Derrick; five great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sons Wayne "Einar" and Mark Velmer, brothers, Joseph, Kenneth, and James Velmer.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 4th from 6-7:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 7:00 p.m. under the direction of American Legion Post 444. A memorial service will follow, with Deacon John Cadeau officiating. A time of fellowship will follow in The Sharing Room at the funeral home. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
