Nathaniel Christopher Foy

Nathaniel “Nate” C. Foy, 36, Escanaba, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 13, 2016 at his home. He struggled with PTSD following his years of military service. Nate was born on September 14, 1979 in L’Anse, son of Gabriel Foy and Bonnie Maki. He grew up on Skanee Road and attended L’Anse Schools. As a kid he enjoyed playing hockey. Nate served in the U.S. Army and Michigan Army National Guard. He was deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq and the Philippines until his honorable discharge in 2012 as Sergeant. He was awarded with an Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Iraq Campaign Medal with three Campaign Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Nato Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Expert Marksmanship Badge with Rifle Bar. Outside of the military Nate had a wide range of skills, having worked in multiple trades. He was always a hard worker and took great pride in his work. Nate enjoyed hunting, walking in the woods, playing guitar and bass, and making others laugh. His greatest enjoyment was his children. He had resided in Escanaba for the past two years. Among survivors include his parents, Gabriel (Tracy) Foy of Escanaba and Bonnie Maki of Schoolcraft; daughter, Jaylyn Foy of L’Anse; son, Connor Foy of Escanaba; brother, Kenneth Foy of Kalamazoo; sister, Dandrea Gunderson of Kalamazoo; brother, Todd Barnett of Portage; two uncles and one aunt; one nephew and two cousins. Nate was preceded in death by his grandparents. Visitation will be held at the Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse on Saturday, July 16, 2016, from 10:00 until noon. A military service will follow under the direction of the Baraga County Area Veterans. Burial will be in the L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
