Norman Lee Shimp

Norman Lee Shimp, beloved husband of Susan Shimp, passed away suddenly at home in Alston, MI on August 8, 2025 at the age of 82.

Born to Merlin & Irene Shimp in Toledo, Ohio, Norm was a veteran of the United States Army. After serving his country in Okinawa, Japan, he worked at Kaiser Jeep in Toledo before pursuing a career in law enforcement with the Detroit Police Department. He met Susan, who worked in the Womens' Division, Detroit Police Department, and they married in 1969.

Norm & Susan shared a love for farming which led to the purchase of their first farm in Pinckney, MI. They were blessed with three children whom they moved to the U.P. 39 years ago upon Norm's retirement from the police force. Once retired, Norm could finally enjoy &dedicate himself to the life he truly loved which was farming.

Through the years he was an active member of the Western UP Livestock Association, National Farmers Organization, Farm Service Agency, Pelkie Co-operative board, Laird Township board, and the American Legion.

Norm shared his love & passion for farming with his children & grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a hand to help others . He was known for his work ethic, honesty, & sense of humor. He will be deeply missed by many.

Norm was proceeded in death by his parents, Merlin & Irene Shimp, his son Damon Shimp, his brothers Russell & Robert Shimp, his nephew Norman, brothers in law: Stephen Green & Carl Hagen.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan, his daughter Stacey (Paul) Mleko, son Jarrod(Anne) Shimp. His cherished grandchildren: Lindsay, Mitchell, Lukas & Mark Mleko. Aspen(Riley) Sheppard, & Wyett Shimp along with one great grandchild Maverick Sheppard. Also surviving are his sister in law, Janet Green, & brother in law, Gregory (Linda) Green, as well as numerous nieces & nephews.

A private ceremony will be held by family with Jacobson Funeral Home assisting.
