Rae Marie Asayag

July 11, 1963 — July 16, 2025

Rae Marie (Weisinger) Asayag, a free-spirited woman, passed away peacefully in her

sleep on July 16, 2025 following a lengthy series of medical conditions. She was 62

and had been a resident of Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee the past two

years.

Mari was born on July 11, 1963 in Sitka, Alaska to parents Russell and Darlene

(LaRock) Weisinger and spent her early years on the Islands and waters of

Southeast Alaska. In 1969 the family relocated to Baraga and then to a farm in the

Pelkie area. Mari seems to have been born with a love of nature and animals of all

types, wild and domestic, and life on the farm nurtured that life-long love. She had

a special affection for cats and horses. In her teen years she was an accomplished

equestrian and earned numerous awards and trophies for showing and racing

events at shows and fairs throughout the Upper Peninsula.

Mari graduated from Baraga Area High School in 1981 and attended Northern

Michigan University. She worked at many jobs throughout her life, her free-spirited

ways seeming to always lead her in new directions. Prior to her medical conditions,

she spent many years at her home in rural Baraga County where she enjoyed a great

variety of wildlife and tended her beloved cats, especially her special kitty Sal. Mari

was able to spend the day before her passing cuddling with her beloved Sal at

Eastwood.

Mari is survived by her son Jordan Asayag (Geneva Martin) of St. Paul, MN;

her parents Russell (Gail) Weisinger of Baraga and Darlene Weisinger of

Marquette; sister Deborah Weisinger (Todd Freese) of Skanee and Mt. Prospect, IL;

Step Siblings Patricia Loosemore of Hartland, WI; Patrick (Suzette) Reilley of

Onalaska, WI; Pamela (Larry) Haack of New Berlin, WI; and Julie Reilley of

Baraga; together with many cousins and friends.

A private family graveside commitment service with Fr. Ben Rivard officiating will

be held at the Baraga Cemetery. Commitment will be followed by a family

gathering to share memories of Mari's free-spirited life.

The family is grateful for all the professional and caring treatment Mari received

from the Nurses, CNA's and all the staff at Eastwood Nursing Center during her time

there.

Jacobson Funeral Service of L'Anse is assisting the family.
