Selma M. (Hanson) Murto, age 95 of L'Anse, MI passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Paynesville, Michigan on January 22, 1918, daughter of Carl and Briita Lisa Hanson. She graduated from Ewen High in 1935 and then worked in Chicago for several years. In 1944 she married Ralph D. Murto and they lived in Bruce Crossing for seven years before moving to Ironwood where they lived until 1987. After retirement, Selma and Ralph lived in Florida for 11 years. Selma moved to L'Anse in 1992 after the death of her husband. Selma enjoyed sewing, knitting, and swimming, and made many quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
Surviving are three children, Karen E. (Richard) Ziminski of Lexington, MA, Martin D. (Gina) Murto of Helena, MT, and Linda C. Murto (Ross Parcels) of Stephenson, MI, one grandson, Daniel H. Ziminski, one great granddaughter, Leah R. Ziminski, two sisters Martha Koskela and Ruth Hanson both of L'Anse, and numerous relatives.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband Ralph Murto; brothers, Ernest, Leonard, Hanse, Norman, Fred, Harold, Russell, Arnold, Roy, Baby Reuben; sisters, Mary Hanson, Signe Larson, Esther Davis, Lillian Hanson, Babies, Ellen, Elma, and Emma.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 29th from 11-1:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Ron Jouppi officiating. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
