Walter Paul Kinnunen, age 68 of Baraga, MI passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 16, 1942 in Alston, MI son of Edwin "Ben" and Mildred Kinnunen. Walter was raised in Alston and graduated from Baraga High School in 1961; then attended Suomi College for 2 years. He was in the US Air Force from 1962-66 during the Vietnam War. He was a member o the Alston VFW post 7646.

Walter married the former Dorothy Aho on April 29, 1968 in Pelkie, MI. He worked for 33 years as custodian and bus driver for Baraga schools for 33 years, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching sports on TV. He liked to smile and was a wonderful husband, loving father and caring grandfather.

Surviving are his wife Dorothy of Baraga; sons, Paul (Tricia) Kinnunen of Redford, MI, Steve Kinnunen of Baraga; daughters, Lisa Kinnunen of Baraga, twins, Tammy (Dave) Hannula and Tina (Paul) Hannula both of Calumet; brother Ray (Evelyn) McClung of Mass City, MI; four grandchildren, Justin, Mya, Gracie, and Merrill Kinnunen.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Esther Knivila.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Rev. John Autio will officiate. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. The Baraga County Area Veterans will conduct military rites at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, under the direction of American Legion Post 444. Burial will be in the Nisula Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
