He was born March 17, 1951 in Marlette, MI son of Clarence "Ted" and Margaret (Ford) Butterfield. Byron grew up on a farm, learning how to work hard at a young age. He played football from the 7th grade through high school. Byron graduated from Marlette High School in 1969 and went on to receive an Associate degree in Forestry Management from MTU. He also followed the stock market and was known for giving people stock tips.
