Eugene Dickens Maurer

June 30, 1923 — November 29, 2020

Eugene Dickens "Dick" Maurer Jr., age 97 of L'Anse, MI passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at Bayside Village in L'Anse, MI.

He was born June 30, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY son of Eugene Sr. and Eleanore (Stanchfield) Maurer. Dick graduated in 1941 from Glenbard Twp. High School in Glen Ellyn, IL. He served in the Navy during WWII and the Naval Reserve during the Korean War. Dick worked for Honeywell Inc as a contract negotiator, living in Minnesota, Florida, North Carolina, and California, moving to L'Anse in 2012.

Dick was a proud member of the Masons, serving as Worshipful Master of the San Dieguito Lodge in Oceanside, CA and enjoyed marching and playing with the drum and bugle core there. He was pleased to join L'Anse Masonic Lodge 547 when he moved to Michigan.

Dick was happiest when with someone doing what they enjoyed. He took up birdwatching with his first wife, went paddling and competed hard at dice with his daughters and fished with his sons in law. Dick lived in gratitude, loved his family fiercely, and expressed his faith in gentle kindness.

Surviving are his daughters, Eleanore "Elen" (Joel “Buzz” Brown) Maurer of L'Anse, Catherine Nelson of Grantsburg, WI; granddaughter Rachel Ann Maurer; and great grandson Archer Almli.

Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Rachel McClanahan Maurer,
son-in-law Keith Nelson; brother Jackson Stanchfield Maurer; and sister Sylvia May Hasson.

Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, WI. The Jacobson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
